Some think that creation doesn't matter. Isn't is all just going to burn anyway? But we should value what God values. It is clear that God loves his creation. He was the first one to say that "it is good".
I find it interesting that this was God's response to Jonah when Jonah was pouting because God decided not to smite the people of Nineveh:
And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city, in which there are more than 120,000 persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle?”If God cares for dumb cows should we not also care for that which is being utterly destroyed in this massive oil spill?
God loves his creation and we should too.

I'm really flabberghasted that there seems to be this attitude among Christians that the environment doesn't matter. I think many discount it simply because many people who are activists for the environment tend to be more liberal. But every day I am amazed by how all of creation displays God's glory and this is breaking my heart. And not only is the oil spill destroying the environment, but the livelihoods and lives of thousands and thousands of people.
I agree with you both. God gave us stewardship of the Earth, including the plants, animals, rivers, mountains, etc. Christians should be more concerned than anyone else if God's amazing world is being destroyed. And as for the oil spill, yes, it is also a disaster for many, many people.
It affects me, my neighbors, my family, the whole Gulf Coast.The way we live, work, socialize, eat, our health,the economy,it affects a large portion of our country. So many people put out of work, so many life styles changed for so long. Soft shell crabbing, fishing off the pier at Dauphin Island, bird watching, bird tagging, summer vacation at Orange Beach, shrimping, sail boat races, fishing rodeos,picking up shells, moonlight walks, watching the dauphins,etc may soon be gone. And you ask, why care? It's a disaster for many reasons and for many years to come.It kills, pollutes, it's unforgivable. And most people care.
