A Very Interesting Conversation with Michael Jordan

This weekend, Michael Jordan will be inducted into the basketball Hall of Fame. Michael Wilbon sat down with him for a 17 min. interview that I found very engaging, but also very sad.

What struck me as sad was the fact that Michael Jordan has lived his whole life for something that is temporal. Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is a huge sign that all the glory and the fame is fading. His physical body is fading as well and you can tell that Michael Jordan hates this. It gnaws at his soul. I grieve for a man whose joy, hope, and happiness is united to something that is temporal. Basketball will not last forever. Fame will not last forever. This is a fact that will not change. The idols always leave us disappointed.

Isaiah 40:7,8:
The grass withers, the flower fades
when the breath of the Lord blows on it;
surely the people are grass.
The grass withers, the flower fades,
but the word of our God will stand forever.
Contrast Michael Jordan's reality with this promise of scripture.

Psalm 16:11:
You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
I pray that MJ would look beyond this temporal hope and one day know that he can have an eternal hope.

Towards the end of the interview, he references "the greatest basketball game ever played". Oh, how I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in that gym! You can read more about that game here.

I did my internship in graduate school at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. It was a ten week internship and around week eight or nine I almost couldn't stomach it any more. Hall of Fames are in the business of idolatry. The truth that they sell is that if someone can hit a ball really far and throw a ball really fast or with a great curve then their glory, name and renown will last for all eternity. It is sad because so many people buy this and think that what athletes do will last forever.
