This morning my wife looked down at her hand and was horrified to see that the diamond in her wedding ring was gone. She has no memory of hitting her hand on anything or it catching on something. She doesn't remember the last time she looked at her ring and seeing it intact. It simply could be anywhere.
It's not a great feeling when a symbol of your marriage and something so expensive is missing, so we gathered the kids, said a quick prayer, and searched for awhile to no avail.
More than anything else I had the sense that our kids were watching us. This is surely a profound teachable moment for them.
These are the things that I am praying for my kids in light of our lost diamond.
- I pray that our kids know that our greatest treasure is not in the things of this world.
- I pray that our kids will know that "man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
- I pray that our kids would see us way more heartbroken over our own sin than a lost diamond.
- I pray that our kids would see us way more concerned about millions of orphans in the world than a lost diamond.
- I pray that our kids would see us way more broken over babies being murdered in the womb than a lost diamond.
- I pray that our kids would know that millions of people in the world will never have access to a pair of shoes, let alone a diamond. May they be humbled and grateful.
- I pray that our kids would remember this day and know that diamond or no diamond, God has, does, and will provide all that we need. We are secure in his provision and shiny rings are simply over and above what we deserve.
But... all this being true, it would be kind of cool if we could find it. :)

Look in her purse. Sharon lost hers once and that's where she found it.
Make sure the kids know that the diamond was just a symbol of a promise. The diamond may be gone, but the promise is forever!
Check under the radiators (if you have those old-fashioned things). That's where I found mine.
Dan's mom lost her diamond and then soon after (of course unrelatedly) his parents separated. He was about 7 and he found the diamond on the floor while he was playing and was overjoyed...he thought his parents marriage would be restored because he had found it...that story always breaks my heart ;(
