Internet Monk has a very compelling essay concerning how we as Christians should be dealing with the issue of homosexuality. It is long, but well worth the read. I found it convicting and enlightening.
Wow. That was quite a read. I have long struggled with this topic. I have always said that my role is to love and not to judge. However, I also do not think that as a Christian, I can condone homosexual behavior.
The sticking point I run into when I am talking with gay friends is that I say we are all sinners...they say, being gay (including sexual behavior) is not a sin. At that point, we reach an impasse.
I continue to be a sinner. I continue to love them. Yet they cannot experience a complete relationship with Christ without casting the sin of homosexual behavior aside.
If you have any thoughts on navigating these troubled waters, I look forward to reading them.
Don't we all struggle w/ temptations? you said, "...they cannot experience a complete realtionship w/ Christ w/o casting the sin of homosexual behavior aside." When can one claim this behavior has been completely cast aside? when one doesn't act on their desires? or...when those desires for the same sex no longer arise? when is one 'free' from this sin? what does that even look like? is it something one struggles w/ through their whole lives? I have many questions that arose as i walked lifes path closely w/ someone who is drawn to those of the same sex. i see her desire to obey God... but also this nasty sin which has entangled her heart. her struggle to daily choose to walk in truth is no different than mine....but it does seem to be more quantifiable. or...if she lapses for one moment the guilt easily weighs her down. i don't know...many questions. no answers. (and...i just skimmed the article posted in original blog...this response is based more upon the concept and other earlier comment).
Agreed. I don't think we can completely cast aside our sinful behavior, but we should seek to do so. In other words, we should seek to be sanctified. We should strive, unceasingly, to rid ourselves of our sinful nature. Many gay people that I know see nothing wrong with their behavior and therefore, certainly do not seek to cast it aside.
Unfortunately, I think that is true for many of us in our sin (gossip, overeating, greed).
I think a gay individual will always have those desires and I don't see that as sinful. Just as I will always have a desire toward gluttony as a former fat person and an alcoholic will always have a desire for another drink. I think it is the behavior that is a problem.
I have no real good answer accept to say that I will continue to pray for and love those with desire for those of the same sex.
my thoughts concerning dockanz...the temptation is not sin, sin comes when you fall to temptation. you can't justify a "life style" as being perfectly normal; it being apart from the teachings of Jesus. period.
