The tablet couldn’t possibly shoulder all the expectations people had for it. Not a replacement for your laptop or phone — but kinda. Something you kick back with in the living room, fire up at work and also carry with you everywhere — sort of. Yes, tablets have sold in large numbers, but rather than being a constant companion, like we envisioned, most tablets today sit idle on coffee tables and nightstands. Simply put, our love for them is dying.

Are these movie and TV narratives reflecting the unforeseen isolation of the iPod age? As we further individualize our mediated and cultured lives and embrace the freedom to dance to whatever cultural beat we like, are we simply left spinning and dizzy? That’s certainly the way I felt after watching Gravity and, to a lesser extent, All is Lost: dizzy, unsteady, destabilized, sea-sick. I was left feeling hungry for ballast, for anchors, for solidity; for something outside of myself to offer orientation.

Because going to Blockbuster on a Friday night used to be overwhelming enough. But at least the options were finite. These days the sheer ubiquity of all that is available, all that is recommended, all that is buzzed about in ceaseless streams of 140-character bursts, leaves me with a bit of vertigo: spinning like Sandra Bullock in Gravity, pulled in a million directions at the mercy of vacuity, untethered and uncertain which way is up

This is pretty remarkable from Tim Cook, CEO of Apple:

 At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better. We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up. There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you. While we're improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app. Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard.

For some reason, I don't think Steve Jobs would have responded like this.  I think he would have just demanded to have the heads of everyone on the Maps team on a platter and delivered to his office, STAT!  Nonetheless, I think this response from Tim is winsome and honesty is always the best policy.

BREAKING: Apple Announces iPhone 5, Ushering In A New Era of World Peace and Prosperity

After you watch the promo video you begin to believe that Apple really believes it!  It is pretty handy though...

CALIFORNIA – Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the new iPhone 5 today, saying, “We are pleased to present the iPhone 5, and we are confident that it can solve not only your problems, but the problems of the entire world.”

As Cook was making the announcement, a lion and a lamb were led onto the stage, each with an iPhone 5 tied around it’s neck. The animals nuzzled each other gently, then lay down together at Cook’s feet. “As you can see,” said Cook, as he stuck his head into the lion’s mouth, “the new iPhone creates peace wherever it goes. It’s really quite a feat of engineering.”

Immediately following the announcement of the new phone, 116 countries immediately entered into peace treaties with each other. As Kim Jong Un, current supreme leader of North Korea, held his new phone, he said, “It is a very happy day for our country. I am disarming all our nuclear warheads and giving the NFL Sunday Ticket to every citizen of our country.”

The Republican and Democratic parties have joined together to hold an emergency convention, in which they will nominate the new iPhone for President. Speaking on behalf of the Republican party, Clint Eastwood held up his empty hand and said, “This phone that I am holding will change politics forever!”
