You Won't Know Until It's Too Late

Kevin DeYoung:
Most pastors won’t tell you this, but they can preach a passable sermon with almost no preparation. We know how to string sentences together. We know more about the Bible than almost everyone in the church. We can cheat our prep time and no one will know. Not right away.

But over time, church members will think to themselves, “Something’s missing. There’ some power not here that used to be here. There’s some gospel connecting no longer at play. I can’t put my finger on it, but pastor doesn’t preach like he used to.” It happens slowly but surely. Maybe the emails seem more pressing this week, or maybe it’s a meeting, or this administrative thing. It’s not one massive thing, but a mountain of molehills. And then one day, Acts 6:4 is gone. The elders don’t pray. The pastors don’t study.

We must all fight for the ministry of the word and prayer. Elders and pastors must fight to keep it and congregations must fight to support it, to encourage it, to give time for it. Because most pastors and most parishoners don’t notice Acts 6:4 is missing until it’s too late.

Remember, You Can't Take It With You

NBC News:

When Walter Samaszko Jr. died at his home in Carson City, Nev., he had $200 in a bank account. But as officials later discovered, Samaszko had about $7 million stored neatly around his home, the Nevada Appeal reported.

In late June, neighbors called authorities because of a smell emanating from Samaszko’s home. He was a recluse who had told them he hated the government and feared getting shots, but still, it had been a while since they had seen him, according to the Appeal.

According to the coroner, Samaszko, 69, had been dead for at least a month. He died of heart problems, the Las Vegas Sun reported.

In came the cleanup crews, which discovered boxes of gold in the garage.
“At that point, we took the house apart,” said Carson City clerk-recorder Alan Glover.

They found gold coins and bullion, tiny dos-pesos, $20 gold pieces, Austrian ducats, Kruggerrands and English Sovereigns dating to the 1840s – enough gold to fill two wheelbarrows.

You Just Have to Ask

[9] And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. [10] For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. [11] What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; [12] or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? [13] If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
(Luke 11:9-13 ESV)

I recently preached on Luke 11:9-13.   It's all about the Fatherhood of God and prayer and is one of my favorite texts in the Bible.   God doesn't hand out snakes.  He loves to give himself as the greatest gift in the universe.  What do we most want?  If you want to take a listen you can do so here.

Preaching on Ephesians 4:25-32

[25] Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. [26] Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, [27] and give no opportunity to the devil. [28] Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. [29] Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. [30] And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. [31] Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. [32] Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
This past Sunday I had the privilege to preach on this text.  Click here is you want to take a listen.  I talked mainly about a unified and mature church.

Preaching on Ephesians 4:1-6

This past Sunday I had the privilege of preaching on Eph. 4:1-6.  In this text Paul is turning a corner in the book of Ephesians.  It was joy to preach this text.
[4:1] I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, [2] with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, [3] eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. [4] There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— [5] one Lord, one faith, one baptism, [6] one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
You can take a listen here if you would like.

Preaching on Orphan Care - James 1:27

This past Sunday I had the privilege of preaching at The Vine on James 1:27 and the calling of orphan care upon the church.  You can take a listen here if you would like.  Here is how I closed the message:
...So we never get past the Gospel. A culture of orphan care will not come through me getting up here and guilting you all into feeling bad about your wealth and wanting to “spread it around” a little bit more.

It is going to stream from a constant meditation upon what God has done in our lives. This comes through preaching, reading, and our relationships that remind us of our salvation in Jesus.

This and only this will establish anything that is actually sustainable. Guilt never sustains. A desire to just be a little more nice will not sustain. Trying to wrap your mind around the need in our world will not sustain. You can’t do it and if you could it would be more weight than you could bear.

What will sustain is a constant remembering of what God has done for us in Christ and how he reached down and took rebellious orphan children and made them members of a new family. Children who are loved, justified, secure, and given a mission.

When are minds and hearts at fixed at the foot of the cross and empty tomb and we look up and see what God has done it will give us a vision to look to the left and the right and see the most broken, needy, powerless and voiceless among us and say to them... wow, I can relate to you. Spiritually speaking I was once in that place too.

Since I can relate. I am going to treat you in the same way I have been treated. I am going to lay down my life for you as Jesus laid down his life for me. This love that has been shown to me is like a fire shut up in my bones that has to find a place to land.

So we will continue to believe the Gospel and never move beyond the Gospel but this gospel HAS to propel us forward into radical (i mean normal) acts of obedience that make the world stop and go, “Who are these people?” and gives us a platform for speaking the truth of the Gospel that we would never have otherwise.

As we have seen this morning from the book of James, if it doesn’t produce this desire then something is off and we need to repent and go back to the Gospel and ask God to make us alive in him.

Don’t get a messianic complex. We can’t save the world.

But God can. So let’s join him in the process and in that process his glory and Gospel will shine like the sun through our spoken declaration and our supportive deeds and our lives will be so blessed and changed.

Ephesians 1:7-10

Yesterday I had the chance to preach on Eph. 1:7-10.  You can check it out here if you would like.  We talked about the past, present, and future of salvation.  We also answered the question, "why do we have redemption through his blood?"

A Community of Confession

This morning I had the opportunity to preach in church.  My text was John 3:19-21.  It assumes that The Church should be a community that confesses sin to one another.  Sin lives in the dark but we are people of the light.  We have to bring our sin into the light to be what God calls us to be has his people.  I hope you take a listen and that it encourages you.

James MacDonald - Wise Up About Alcohol - Part 1

James MacDonald is the Senior Pastor of Harvest Bible Chapel in Illinois. He is a very gifted communicator and has a ministry that reaches thousands through his preaching and various forms of media. I have personally benefited from his blog and find myself agreeing with much of what he has posted.

Recently Pastor MacDonald preached a sermon from his series on the Proverbs called "Wise Up About Alcohol". You can listen to the two parts here and here.

In the next few days I want to interact with what Pastor MacDonald presents here. I care little about resurrecting a tired debate about alcohol and Christians, but I think there are deeper issues in this message that I would like to address.

In his message he gives six reasons why he believes that total abstinence from alcohol should be the norm for all Christians. His six reasons are:
1. Because drunkenness is a sin and not a disease.
2. Because alcohol impairs wisdom.
3. Because alcohol is an unnecessary drug.
4. Because alcohol is destructive.
5. Because alcohol is addictive.
6. Because wisdom calls me to set it aside.
I want to start today by looking at point #1.

1. Because drunkenness is a sin and not a disease.

Agreed. I greatly appreciated Pastor McDonald’s thoughts there. The Bible always presents drunkenness as a sin issue and not a disease. What about genetic predisposition? There are conflicting studies about this and the subject is far from settled.

I would add that even if alcoholism was found to be a genetic disposition it wouldn't matter in the least. Christian theology has a category for this. In light of the Fall, Romans 8 speaks of the creation being subjected to frustration or futility. That means that on this side of The New Heavens and The New Earth, things don't work right. We are broken from the DNA on up. If alcoholism can be shown to be a "disease", this does not absolve anyone of the responsibility to address this as sin. I know that straight from the womb I have a disposition towards certain sin issues. I am still called to "put to death" these misdeeds (Col. 3:5).

Tomorrow I'll address his second point, that alcohol impairs wisdom.

Preaching on Adoption

Yesterday morning I had the opportunity to preach at our church concerning spiritual and physical adoption. My text was Eph. 1:4-6. If you are interested you can view it below.

If you don't want to watch the whole thing you can check out a brief segment where I brought my daughter Mya up on stage to help me illustrate a point from the text. At this point in the message I am talking about the fact that God has adopted us from before the foundation of the world so that we would be holy and blameless (Eph. 1:4).

Manliness and Adoption

I just finished listening to one the most powerful sermons on adoption that I have ever heard. It's by David Prince and is entitled, The Manliness of Adoption: Testosterone and Pure Religion: James 1:27. If you are at all considering adoption or not considering adoption (so I guess that's all of you) I would recommend listening to it. It will bless you for sure.

You can listen or download here.

All The Messages From The Recent Worship God 09 Conference

As one would expect, all these messages are completely worth the listen. I was told (I had to leave early) that the Q and A time with Bob Kauflin and C.J. Mahaney was especially exceptional. "The Pipe Bomb" (John Piper) brought the thunder as usually. Don't miss those two messages.

From their website:

The WorshipGod Conference is devoted to the theology, practice, and joy of God-honoring worship. Our 2009 conference was held August 5–8 at Covenant Life Church in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

General-session audio is available for listening or download below. Seminar audio will be available in the coming weeks.
