Why are so many professional athletes, who have spent their entire lives in organized sports, masters at cheating, serial adultery, drunkenness, compulsive gambling, drug abuse, and thuggish fighting (to name just a few of the vices)? The truth is that sports no more builds character than attending Clemson University football games qualifies you to replace Tommy Bowden as head coach.

I wholeheartedly disagree.
First, because it built character in me. I learned how to deal with losing. I learned how to work hard to attain a goal. I learned to respect authority. These are all character issues, and they're just the tip of the iceberg.
Secondly, just because there are a significant number of examples irresponsible, cheating morons at higher level sports (college and pro) doesn't mean sports categorically doesn't build character. Think of the countless millions from 5 year old soccer through high school volleyball, who aren't represented by that demographic.
Now, if he were making a case that while sports can build character, having great success in sports at a higher level can break down character ... that's an argument I could listen to. Rock star status isn't good for young guys who don't have a solid foundation with which to handle it - and most of the most successful athletes don't have that kind of foundation.
Did sports build humility in you along with your rockin character?
:)
I hear what you are saying. I had the same thoughts. Of course it CAN build it, but it won't always. I think that is the point. I think he is just trying to be provocative.
