Why Pro-Life Presidents Matter

In light of the brewing discussion a few posts down concerning Obama and abortion, I thought I would point to this helpful post from Joe Carter entitled, Why Pro-Life Presidents Matter.

Infanticide bothers me. Christians that participate bother me even more.

Z - Thanks for posting the link to the article. It did make me re-hash my opinion on how influential the President is on the abortion issue.

As I stated in my previous comments, I could never vote for a non pro-life President. But, I still struggle with how important one human, by himself, is in the grand scheme of things. Just consider that since 1980, we've had 8 years of Reagan, 4 years of G.H.W. Bush and almost 8 years of G.W. Bush. Thats 20 years of pro-life Presidents. Furthermore, during 6 years of G.W. Bush's presidency, we had a "conservative" majority in our Nation's House and Senate. And, we have even had several more pro-life judges appointed (almost an "easy" majority on the bench). But, Roe vs. Wade has not been overturned, and the garbage that is spewed out of the Planned Parenthood camp has not ceased to hold influence in the capital of the states and our Nation.

I guess my main point is that yes, Christians should vote for pro-life politicians (although no one should consider that as the only required qualification of a good leader!), but they must keep in mind that that is really a small piece in the puzzle.

What our Nation really needs is another Great Awakening. I believe that once the guilt of our individual and collective sins takes the grip of our conscience, the abortion problem, along with all other moral dilemmas of our era, will be naturally (rather supernaturally) solved. After such a move of National repentance, no one will be able to talk of, promote and practice such evils in a perverted, positive manner in our classrooms, universities, "clinics," and public forums without feeling a strong sense of feeling that the beliefs they hold to, and the works they perform with their hands, are once again in the far minority.

Well said, Robert. You said what I apparently could not communicate.

Robert, thank you for your thoughtful and well-considered words. You are right-- we desperately need another Great Awakening, a movement of the Holy Spirit (*not* a political movement) to change America's, and the world's, hearts on abortion.

I will continue to vote for pro-life politicians; I could not, in good conscience, vote for someone who takes the "pro-choice" stance. Roe vs. Wade should be overturned. I firmly believe that that is *one* important solution to the evil of abortion. However, it is *only* one solution. Women will continue to have abortions (albeit at a much lesser rate), even if Roe vs. Wade is overturned, because of the simple fact of sin in this world-- sin on the part of the men who abandon their pregnant wives or girlfriends, and/or pressure them to have abortions, sin on the part of some churches who are perhaps not helping women as they should, sin on the part of women who don't want to be inconvenienced by an unplanned life, even just to carry it to term, etc. The only solution to the abortions that will *still* happen, if or when abortion is outlawed, is for peoples' hearts and lives to be changed by the Holy Spirit who enables people to see the sacredness of *every* single life, born and unborn. May God open hearts and eyes that are blinded to this reality, as mine were for so many years.
