AD on iTunes

This just in from iTunes: All three seasons of Arrested Development are now avaliable. Check it out!

I've said it before, but this is probably the funniest and most creative TV show of all time.

Zach, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on an issue related to this subject. I'm not an avid fan of Arrested Development, but I have watched it more than once and found at least some of the show to be very funny and intelligent. (I love shows that are both funny *and* intelligent-- they seem to be increasingly rare on TV these days!) I have also noticed that, at least on the episodes of AD I have seen, a good bit of the humour is of a... well.. crude nature (I would choose another word, but I don't know of another way to describe it)-- some of it sexual innuendo, some of it more brazenly sexual, some of it making light of things like divorce, and so on. To be careful, that's not an outright statement on all aspects of the show-- just an observation of certain elements that I have noticed in it at times.

My dilemma (and question) is this--how are we, as Christians, to think about shows such as AD, which are intelligent, creative, and funny, but which also seem to contain a good bit of this kind of more "crude" humour? I say "seem to contain" here because, honestly, I didn't watch AD enough to know for certain if crudeness is a regular part of its humour.

I should say that I am definitely *not* of a legalistic mindset about watching television shows or movies. Sometimes, I watch R-rated films which feature characters behaving in very sinful ways at times. I also know that some Christians would say that that choice is absolutely wrong on my part. However, I don't think that the matter is so easily resolved. For example, a film can portray sinful behavior in a way that doesn't glorify such behavior but shows it for what it is-- evil, harmful to others, self-destructive, etc.

However, what about films or shows that seem to treat lightly, and/or joke about, things which objectively grieve the heart of God? I'm thinking in the sense of Ephesians 5:3-4 here. From what you have seen of AD (being a more avid fan of it than I am), do you think that much of its humour would grieve God? Again, I was not a sufficiently consistent enough watcher of the show to know if it was *regularly* crude or flippant in its humour, in the Ephesians 5:3-4 sense. What do you think?
