Do You Need Rescuing?

One of the songs that I lead at our church is called Rescue. (Click here for my preferred arrangement - iTunes). Here are the lyrics for the chorus:
I need you Jesus to come to my rescue
Where else can I go?
There's no other name by which I am saved
Capture me with grace, I will follow You
I like this chorus because it has such strong Biblical ties:
John 6:66-68 - After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the Twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life...

Acts 4:12 - And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
But that being said, if you are a guy, would it make you feel weird to sing that chorus? For awhile I have been thinking that this song might be kind of awkward for guys to sing since it could make guys feel like the damsel in distress calling out from the high tower to the knight in shining armor to come to the rescue. Do you get that vibe?

Last night, in our home group, we started an 8 week series on the book of Colossians. In studying for it I was reminded of this verse from Col. 1:

13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,

14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Being "rescued" is a Biblical word that we should not shy away from. As guys if we that makes us nervous I think we need to get over ourselves and let God's word define our categories masculinity and not some fairly tale. If you can't allow yourself to be rescued then you probably have no need for the gospel.

Thoughts?

Z- Great thoughts. I also struggle with singing about how Jesus is "beautiful." It seems so feminine.

For the "rescue" I try to think more about being in a battle rather than a damsel in distress. If I'm a soldier fighting with my buds against the enemy and we aren't succeeding, and an ally comes along in their fighter jets and takes out the enemy with the missiles - I have just been rescued, and I am ecstatic.

I have been fighting the good fight, yet I still needed rescuing because I couldn't do it on my own. I'm not a princess trapped in a balcony by Rumplestiltskin, but a warrior fighting with the King. And this King rescues his own soldiers. The only way to win is when the King takes over... which I guess is a beautiful thing.
