Fall and Redemption with the Newsboys

Christian music veterans might be interested to read this article about John James, former front man for The Newsboys. Heartbreaking, but honest and redemptive in the end.

Zach - thanks for posting this interview.

I was going through old CD's a couple weeks ago, getting rid of a whole bunch of mid-90's stuff that I don't listen to anymore, and I came across the Take Me To Your Leader CD, and was wondering what ever happened to John James. I remember hearing the ministry story they pitched when he left (in fact I think they mentioned it at a concert I went to in Saginaw, MI).

That is a very heartbreaking story, and kinds of taints the youthful memories of how "cool" the Take Me To Your Leader tour was (at least relative to what was going on in the "Christian" music circles). But, it was a huge reminder of how faithful God is, especially at the moments when we are at the bottom of the barrel when no one else would give a rip about us.

I've been out of connection with the CCM / mainstream "Christian" rock scene for a while now, opting more of the less known and indie stuff. I love high quality and original music (both lyrically and melodically), especially when its written and performed by fellow Christians, but I really question the whole ministry aspect of the produced / marketed music scene, and whether or not it is a ministry at all, and whether we are putting (or allowing/promoting) folks to be on a pedestal that Christians were never intended to be placed on. Is it possible to seek large record sells, huge concert turn-outs without falling into some form of depression-inducing pride trap?
