Can You Tell The Storyline of the Bible?

I couldn't until probably a few years ago. I think this is an absolutely essential skill for any Christian. It makes our Bible reading come alive as we gain a context for where the passage we are reading fits into the whole of the story. In our home group right now we are doing a study that enables us to do this and I think our group is unanimously thankful that we are doing so.

Here are five books you might want to check out to help you toward this end:

1. The Drama of Scripture - Craig G. Bartholomew and Michael W. Goheen

2. God's Big Picture - Vaughn Roberts

3. As Far As The Curse is Found - Michael Williams

4. According To Plan - Graeme Goldsworthy

5. The Big Picture Story Bible - David Helm

Hey Zach,

I'm interested in doing this with our small group. Do you have a curriculum, or are you reading one of these books as a group?

Thanks for letting me know you are using "The Drama of Scripture." I'd seen that one... but I was leaning towards using either "The Big Picture" because it has Bible reading and study questions built in, or "According to Plan," because it is a more juicy theology text. What are the benefits to "Drama of Scripture" for your group?

Adrienne,

To be honest I have only read #1, 3 and 5. I like Drama of Scripture because it is easy to understand and flows really well. Mike Williams' book is a bit more theology heavy if you want to check that one out as well. He is a great prof at the seminary where I go.

It tells the storyline in two ways -- the conversational way (the upper yellow arrow for navigation) and the narrative (the lower yellow navigational arrows.)

The story of this project is found in the 23 Chapter ("The Gospel for a New Generation") of DA Carson's "Telling the Truth: Evangelizing Postmoderns." (Check Google Books)
