Oprah and Stem Cells

STR.org reports on an interesting development from the Oprah Winfrey Show:
Wouldn't it be great to use Oprah Winfrey's TV show to explain how adult stem cells are superior to embryonic stem cells for potentially treating Parkinson’s disease?

Ask and you shall receive.

Check out how Dr. Oz explains to Oprah, her audience, and Michael J. Fox (an ardent embryonic stem cell supporter) that "the stem cell debate is dead." The reason? He says embryonic stem cells aren't as desirable because they can become cancerous. Adult stem cells, on the other hand, can be induced to become as flexible as embryonic stem cells without the cancerous side effects. I think Dr. Oz even hints (although he doesn’t spell it out) that cloning won’t be necessary since adult stem cells have the same genes as the patient.

What's also amazing is that Dr. Oz suggests that adult stem cells might be used to treat Parkinson's disease and other illnesses in under 10 years. Whether or not his predictions are accurate, it's refreshing to see the potential of adult stem cell therapy featured so prominently while embryonic stem cells are downplayed.

Wow, that is a big deal. I hope it's true. If some scientists won't be convinced by moral arguments, we can at least pray that the science would bear out that destroying embryos for stem cells is a bad idea.

Thanks for spreading the word. I, uh, don't check Oprah's site all that often.

That's an interesting way to think of it, Adam. If scientists won't be convinced by God's revelation in his Word, perhaps they'll be convinced (albeit unwittingly) by his revelation in his world.

All truth is God's truth.
