Tim Challies highlights a helpful article on why you don't want to use credit cards. We have been 6 years without them now and feeling better than ever. Forsake the kindergarten of instant gratification and live out the wise way of planning, patience and hard-work.
If you are not down with Dave Ramsey yet, check it before you wreck it. (Yeah, I just said that.)

We want to be there so bad, but there's just always something that comes up and forces us to re-direct our money from the 'responsible' direction we want to go... car breaks down, kid gets sick...
I don't even know how we got into credit card debt in the first place, but I guarantee it wasn't worth it!
Yeah, I hear you. Having an emergency fund is what we use to deal with all the unpredictable stuff. It's crucial to have.

credit cards CAN be used responsibly though...and have benefits for those that do.
Amy,
Read the link that put up for Dave Ramsey. I think it will prove beneficial. I know there are always exceptions. No doubt about that. They are rare though.

My wife and I have a credit card (we didn't for the first two or so years of marriage). we use an electronic envelope system (meaning we spend money we already have allocated towards specific uses) The credit card is then paid off every month with the money that is sitting in our bank account. We get a $250 check every 3-4 months chase bank for using a credit card like we are using a debit card.
