I think we all forget that there are musical feats in classical music that blow even the fastest guitar shredders out of the water. It's just not as flashy without the distortion, drums, and spandex
Argerich is easily one of the greatest pianists who ever lived imho - let me repeat that, "ever lived" - watch her play the Rach3 if you don't believe me - she plays octaves and chords as single notes with a speed almost impossible to comprehend
Martha Argerich is unquestionably gifted (and that is an understatement). However, I have been listening to classical music for many years, especially classical piano, and I just can't stand the way that she "rushes" many pieces and/or plays so many of them with a very "stormy" temperament (regardless of whether the composer(s) meant them to sound that way or not).
To each his/her own though-- Argerich has legions of admirers, and again, she *is* very highly gifted. For myself, I *strongly* prefer Maurizio Pollini's more measured and disciplined, yet still dazzling and emotional, performances.
Christopher, I'm sure I got caught up in the moment while listening to her :) I like Pollini - I have Chopin's etudes - you are right, there is some real emotion in his playing. Jeff
