What Really Is The Gospel?

In light of some of the discussions that have been going on around here lately, I found Jeff Purswell's short post here to be informative: What Precisely Is the Gospel?

Excellent.
Before coming to Japan as a missionary I really wondered if Japan even needed missionaries. Aren't they rich? After much prayer and Bible reading God kept hitting me with the fact they are really poor, wretched, naked and blind. (Rev. 3:14ff) This is the true state of Japan.
While I am involved with relieving the poor here and in other poorer countries, it comes from an overflow of the gospel and as a path for the gospel message to flow. Gospel preaching and acts of love/physical help should never be divorced, but still they are separate things.
As an aside, I find it interesting that "rich" Japan has such a high suicide rate, and yet poor countries like India have so many more people who would define their lives as, "happy".
