The Price of Adoption

Amy Adair:

Imagine what would happen if every Christian world-wide cared for orphans? I know not every Christian is called to parent an orphaned child. But I do believe that Christ calls every Christian to care for and support the fatherless. That could be praying for an adoptive family, supporting an adoption cause, or sponsoring a waiting child.

Financing an adoption isn’t the price tag that should shock people. It’s the cost of standing by and doing nothing that should leave Christ-followers speechless.

Interesting post. I think there is a currious bias against adoption costing anything at all. I think expecting adoption in general and international adoption specifically to be much less expensive is kind of like wanting free health care or being for socialism...it would be nice and all but that's not how economics works. I think that as long as we as Christians are willing to spend $20k to $30k on new cars (with credit at that) we should not be appalled at adoption costing the same when there are so many people and agencies involved. Are there some "shady" costs involved. Maybe, maybe not. But leaving a child without a home for the cost of a car is not the answer. All this before mentioning that as of right now most people can get around a $12,000 tax credit from the IRS when adopting, bringing the cost more in line with a decent used car. Oh yeah, did I mention our God owns the cattle on a thousand hills? Not everyone is called to adoption, but cost should not be the deciding factor.
