Comparing The New Smartphones

iPhone 4 launches tomorrow.  It will rawk your world.  But if you don't believe me and want to shop around a bit you can see this interesting article and chart that compares the best smartphones out there right now.

The iPhone is decent, but the newly released Droid X on Verizon pretty much blows the iPhone away. Apple pretty much locks you down when using their product; no customizability, small screen size (4.3" v. 3.5" on iPhone), better network (Verizon or Sprint).

Don't waste your money on an iPhone, and try not to be a sheep.

Just got my iPhone 4 today. I'm guessing you will be picking one up? They can't leave Apple employees with old models, right?

Anonymous has a good point.

Look, I'm not an Apple hater (nor a fan boy), but there are at least 2 serious limitations with the new iph: closed source hardware/software and ATT (new data limits SUCK).

Lots of folks don't care about that, they just want something that works. However, GigaOM just blogged a piece about the explosion of the android market, and the implications for smartphones of an 'openess' paradigm. How many apps do you run on your phone? 30, 50, 100. Both the Ap and And market have plenty of Apps to do everything we need. Android is projected to catch up in the next year. What's more, you don't need to wait for anyone (company or carrier) to download updates.

Apple is going to need to do something quick. IMO, their best bet is to go CDMA and allow folks like Verizon to carry the phone.

Also, this comparison will soon be outdated. On the horizon we have the DroidX, the Samsung Galaxy S, and the new Windows7 phone. All of these offer more competition to the iph4, have bigger screens, do HD vid, and have incredible screen resolution as well.

I guess we'll have to see. The best part for consumers is that there is crazy competition out there forcing innovation in the market. No one can deny that Apple has helped to get us there.

I agree with the first comment. Don't like Apple's closed source approach. I'll probably be going with the Droid.

I also have an itouch & a Zune HD. Really like both, but I Love the Zune and the Zune Software. Windows phone 7 looks to be a great phone with an interface similar to the Zune.

Greg,

If you keep flirting with the dark side you may never come back.

So... HD video, best resolution on a mobile phone screen, MobileMe "find my iPhone" application, face to face calling, er...(I could keep going) Kind of nice being a "sheep" I think. Of course all the new phone in the next year will copy all this, but just at least acknowledge that Apple was the first to do it and everyone else is just trying to keep up.

:)

Zach, a 3.5" screen is tiny, you can barely watch videos on it. It doesn't matter what the resolution is if you need to squint to see it.

"Find my phone" is available on basically all other phones on market today.

Face-to-face calling was already on the Evo 4g months before the iPhone 4g.

Dual-microphones for sound cancellation was available long before the iPhone, and Apple basically copied this from the other phones on the market.

All other devices can record HD video as well.

The iPhone only has a 5 megapixel camera versus 8 megapixel in other phones.

Doesn't have 4g internet speed.

iPhone is only on AT&T (crappy network).

Essentially, being a sheep makes you look at the iPhone and see its negatives as positives, and failing to see the positives of other phones and how Apple copied many, many features from other phones.

Don't be a sheep.

Wow, it looks like if you hold the phone with your hand, you lose reception and the ability to make phone calls or use data.

I guess that's why people pay extra for Crapple!
