Much has been made in the evangelical world over the release of Rob Bell’s new book, Love Wins. If you’re looking for a good, thorough, thoughtful, and accurate review of the book, then please look here. Or here.
Tim Challies and Kevin DeYoung did it better than I ever could. And they are right in their assessment.
My problem is not that I agree with Bell’s seeming denial of orthodoxy. I don’t agree with him.
My problem is that I want to agree with him. But it’s not because I cannot accept the reality of hell. I can, and I’m praying to the end right now that hell’s reality would help me live with a great sense of urgency.
Nope, I want to agree with him because of his writing. It’s because his writing is beautiful and engaging. It touches the hearts of his readers and because it emotionally moves people, it takes them to places and beliefs they might not want – or intend – to go to and hold.
So what do we do with that?
