Should College Athletes Be Paid?

Jason Whitlock thinks so.  He has a compelling argument.  Check out his most recent article.

Yes. When I was running XC... it was impossible to have a job.. and therefor I was always poor, so I had to quit... therefore yes. ;)

I think they should too. That's one of the reasons I didn't play college basketball, I needed to work. The other reasons I didn't play college basketball were because I was too slow, I couldn't shoot and I'm only 5'10", but I think the pay was the biggest deterrent.

Typically I am in favor of college football and basketball players getting paid. But I have to wonder what would happen if a pay scale were instituted...

Schools like USC, Texas, Alabama, and Notre Dame probably generate the most revenue in football with schools like North Carolina, Duke, Kansas, and Kentucky doing the same in basketball. These schools would be able to pay their athletes more, therefore leading to every single top recruit going there in order to make more money. This would ruin college sports altogether. No longer would parity exist, but the same 5-10 schools would win year-in and year-out. Even more so than they do already.

So, how does this get fixed? Some argue - pay every college and football player the same based on the NCAA's gross revenue from each sport. But then we're back to square one where they don't get paid based on their actual value. QBs should make more than punters, right? An All-American point guard on an unknown team (think Stephen Curry a few years ago) should make more than a bench warmer at UNC, right?

There are so many problems with paying college athletes that it's gonna take more thought that just saying they deserve it (which I agree that SOME of them do).
