The Girl Who Lost Her Faith Listening to CCM

Denny Burk:
I just read one of the most fascinating and sad articles that I have read in a long time. The article is by Meghan O’Gieblyn, and it’s a brief narrative of her childhood transition from being a fan of contemporary Christian music (CCM) to being a fan of secular music. As an avid consumer of CCM through the 80′s and 90′s, I relate to a great deal of what is in this article.

she probably didn't lose her faith listening to CCM, but because there was no one else in her life to water and nurture her faith (parents?).

I agree that the unauthentic production of CCM is disheartening, but I wouldn't go as far as saying it could make one lose their faith. That is, if they really had true faith in the beginning and not some pseudo-form made up of cheesy concerts and entertainment-based youth groups.

Sad, but predictable. Most of the reasons for loosing your religion, as in this example, have nothing to do with CCM vs MTV and the coming of age during that time. It has eveything to do with what Mark Noll called The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind and what J. Gresham Machen said - “False ideas are the greatest obstacles to the reception of the Gospel.” In this case, the false ideas were more attractive. And as a consumer, ready for the new and improved, unless the vibrancy of a living faith is present and nourished, a dead faith will always win out.

Just ONLY let your kids listen to jazz...and they will remain Christians all their lives. a good dose of Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans or Hank Mobley and they'll ALWAYS love Jesus.

sound stupid? of course it is. but so is saying that you lost your faith because of a type of music.
