Men Worth Imitating

Guest Post by Los Griego

One of the heartbeats behind Redemption Church will be to train up men and women for leadership and mission. Half of this equation will be of specific focus, the men. Over the past few decades the focus of calling out men, training them up as husbands, fathers, leaders and pastors has been lacking. To say that the results cannot be felt throughout the church and culture would be a lie straight from the enemy. We live in a culture that is filled with boys claiming to be men, boys who do not lead out in home, in the church, or anywhere really. Instead these boys live for themselves, are lazy and scared of risk, unless it is attached to a video game or a fantasy football league. We got boys who like to study about being a biblical man, but don't actually risk, die to self, and step on the field to actually be one.

One of our prayers is to be a church that trains up boys to be men. To protect women, to lead with love and gentleness, to risk and sacrifice for the good of others, especially their wife and children. We want to call men to lead out on the mission field, to plant many churches and to be excited to point people to the True Man, Jesus.

I believe that we are already on our way. We have not launched, but we have men who I call friends and brothers in our core group already that I pray my sons will grow up to see as models, to imitate and follow. One of these men is a core group leader, Bryan Lopez. This past weekend his family was sick, 6 kids (3 of them are triplets which the Lopezes adopted last year) and his wife were all ill. Below is a Facebook post that his wife, Sherry, wrote about what type of father and husband Bryan is in this moments. Yes, Bryan is not perfect, but he is a brother and friend I am excited to be on the battleground with as we train up other men to follow his (and I pray mine as well) lead.

From Sherry Lopez:

Today my kids never got dressed. Today my little boys wore nothing more than a diaper all day. Today sprite and crackers were the only meal or snack served. Today my kids watched TV all day long. Today we did not open the Bible and read to the kids, but today in my house the gospel was preached. My kids watched their dad hold back hair, clean up vomit, do laundry, give multiple baths and serve our sick family. All this done with very little sleep and no complaining. Thankful for a husband that loves the Lord and serves his family.

I think this is what Paul was talking about when he told the men of Corinth this:

1 Corinthians 16:13–14 (ESV) 13 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 14 Let all that you do be done in love.
