Engaging Without Watering Down

Can you imagine if the church was known for this all around the world? Would it not create a great platform to speak truth and build relationships?

You may disagree.  That's ok, but if so, what is your method for structuring yourself to be around those who don't know Jesus in such a way that they know you are there to love and serve?

I don't understand why the church needs to "lock arms" with unbelievers in this way. There's really no reason we can't reach out without fellowshiping with darkness.

“…but we have massive agreement around needing to help people who are not currently being served."

In other words, “Our Liberal/Progressive policy's & social agenda have bankrupted the city and we don't have the financial wherewithal to provide basic services anymore and to do what govt. is really supposed to doing. So we are taking advantage of the "New Evangelicals" and using their gullibility & lack of discernment to help rescue us from those failed policy's and to save us from ourselves and the natural consequences of our corrupt & foolish ideas.”

Maybe I'm missing the point of your post. Aren't they doing what the church is supposed to be doing? Except, since they aren't naming Christ, it IS watered down. I wonder if there's something not being said in this piece. Since they are working with the state, I wouldn't be surprised if a deal was struck that no religion would be taught. We just need to stop being lazy and start reaching out to our communities. But Christ will get the glory instead of the state. I also wonder if Christ would get more glory if this church would lovingly refuse to work so closely with a sodomite (and thoroughly teach what the Bible says about it).

Mike has it about right. The "New Evangelicalism" is just a watered down approach as was/is the Social Gospel at the turn of the last century. And in their cooperation with one of the most "liberal, secular cities in America" there is no mention of the Gospel - just an over concern for improving an image that to many is "strident, judgmental" & "angry." I wonder if the Apostle Paul was worried about his image when he preached Christ to the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers at the Areopagus to the point he would do landscaping and paint fences in his effort to reach out to his community?
