The New Gimmick in Live Music

Paste Magazine:
The Tupac hologram that appeared at this year’s Coachella music festival got quite a bit of hype and has since inspired the possibility of other deceased icon creations. According to Billboard, the company that created the life-like Tupac, Digital Domain Media Group, recently signed an exclusive deal with Core Media Group to produce a series of Elvis holograms for various entertainment projects.

As reported, the estates for other artists including Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and Marilyn Monroe have also been considering the idea of holographic live performances.

For some people, these virtual performances might be a bit disturbing or bizarre, but plans for such entertainment have been in the works for many years, according to Jeff Jampol, who manages The Doors’ estate. “We’re trying to get to a point where 3-D characters will walk around,” he told Billboard. “Hopefully, ‘Jim Morrison’ will be able to walk right up to you, look you in the eye, sing right at you and then turn around and walk away.”

Janie Hendrix, sister of the late rock legend, said “For us, of course, it’s about keeping Jimi authentically correct,” she said. “There are no absolutes at this point.”

We’ll see if all of this goes to fruition. For now, most live shows will have to be just that.
