The Expository Preaching Method of Church Growth

Guest post by Eric McKiddie

D. Martin Lloyd-Jones answers the objection that people won't come to your church if you preach the Bible:
"The answer is that they will come, and that they do come when it is true preaching...

This may be slow work; it often is; it is a long-term policy. But my whole contention is that it works, that it pays, and that it is honored, and must be, because it is God's own method. This is the thing to which He calls us, it is the thing into which He thrusts us forth, and therefore He will honour it. He has always honoured it and still honours it in this modern world, and after you have tried these other methods and schemes, and found that they will come to nothing, you will be driven back to this ultimately.

This is the method by which churches have always come into being. You see it in the New Testament, and you see it in the subsequent history of the Church, and you can see it in this modern world."

I have pastored several small churches and have used expository preaching. Most of the churches experienced growth. You don't have to water down the message to reach people.

HRL: expository preaching of the type Martyn Lloyd-Jones was backing, is not what some are doing now under that heading--it took 32 sermons for M L-J to do John 17, whereas doing it in one sermon IS NOT EXPOSITOIRY PREACHING. What is the hurry???
