Interesting article here from the Gospel Coalition blog.
There has been some healthy discussion as of late in reference to the benefits and downsides of short term mission teams. Do they help or hurt? Obviously, that is not a simply answer and demands many qualifications.
Personally, I would like to see more emphasis on short term teams being a means by which long term laborers can be raised up.

Dr Robert Priest (Trinity Seminary) has done research on the effectiveness of short-term missions that goes beyond short-termers' self-reporting and our general impressions. The gist of his research is in this article in Christianity Today: http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2005/julyweb-only/22.0.html?paging=off. As someone who's been on several sides of this multifaceted missions equation, Priest's conclusions make alot of sense to me.
