A Review - Worldliness - Chapter 1 by C.J. Mahaney

I recently received an advanced copy of Worldliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World, edited by C.J. Mahaney with chapter contributions from C.J., Bob Kauflin, John Piper, Dave Harvey, Jeff Purswell and Craig Cabaniss. I was humbled to be asked to review this book for my blog and look forward to interacting with it. Today's post will focus on chapter one by C.J. Mahaney entitled, “Is This Verse In Your Bible?”

Mahaney starts the chapter by pointing out that all of us have verses in the Bible that we don't like to read. We are tempted to pick and choose that which is most comfortable for us. He states that 1 John 2:15, "Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him", is probably one of those verses that many of us like to avoid. Why? Because it’s rather black and white and has implications that most of us find uncomfortable. He goes on to say that worldliness for most of us is not something we consciously decide to engage in, but rather is a state of being that we slowly drift into. A lifestyle of worldliness doesn't happen overnight.

I appreciated C.J.’s admition that this issue of worldliness frequently raises the question of legalism. I can relate to this objection. Oftentimes for me, when the topic is raised my first thought association is people who think playing cards equates to being in league with the devil and those that say using drums in church is “using the world’s music”. C.J. reminds us that baggage or no baggage with this verse, 1 John 2:15 is simply God’s word, thus, as Christians; we have to come to terms with it. God is not out to spoil our fun but wants to meet our greatest need, which is to know Him and his ways. Are we going to let God set the terms based on His Word, or are we going to seek to be autonomous from Him by being a law unto ourselves? C.J. reminds us that 1 John 2:15 is not “legalistic restrictions from an irritated God who doesn’t want us to enjoy ourselves.” But rather, “warnings are expressions of God’s mercy and wisdom. They’re given for our good, to protect us from sin and its consequences.”

C.J. states, “The greatest challenge facing American evangelicals is not persecution from the world, but seduction by the world.” He then gives this helpful test, “…is your lifestyle obviously different from that of the non-Christian?” That is a great question to think through. If someone opened your checkbook (a great indicator of your values) would they see a difference between how you spend your money and that of a non-Christian?

In his discussion of worldliness I was eager to read his definition of what that looks like and he states it here: “Worldliness, then is a love for this fallen world. It's loving the values and pursuits of the world that stand opposed to God. More specifically, it is to gratify and exalt oneself to the exclusion of God.”

He then asks, "Does that description sound familiar? Does it describe you?" He provides a list of questions to think through to help you discern one’s heart. "What dominates your mind and stirs your heart? Is it discontentment with your life? Longing for earthly pleasures? Does outward prosperity appeal to you more than growth in godliness? Or is your prayer life characterized by heartfelt supplications for God's will to be done and his kingdom to come? Do you covet the esteem and crave the approval of those around you? Do you go to great lengths to avoid looking foolish or being rejected for your Christian faith? Do you consider present and material results more important than eternal reward? Have you departed from God and adopted idols instead? Are you at war with God? These are tough questions, I know; but they are necessary if you’re to discover whether you have been infected with the disease of worldliness."

These questions caused me to pause and left me feeling a bit uneasy. Haven’t we all been “infected”? As I used this chapter to diagnosis my own level of worldliness, I found myself not sure how to answer because the answer that came back as I contemplated all these questions was, "I am not as unworldly AS I SHOULD BE."

For example, with the question that I quoted above, "Does outward prosperity appeal to you more than growth in godliness?" My answer is sadly, sometimes yes, but also sometimes no. Does any Christian (unless you are one who believes in total sanctification in this life) answer that question with a resounding, "Yes! I have been purged of my sinful pull towards outward prosperity."

I fully know that C.J. whole-heartedly believes in progressive sanctification. But I left this chapter feeling a bit like worldliness in the life of a Christian is a black and white issue. Either you are worldly or you are not. I wish there would have been a statement about the fact that one will never arrive in the fight against worldliness. But keep on fighting! Fight to the death! You will always be a work in progress and when asked how "worldly" are you, you will always have to answer, "Sadly, not as unworldly AS I SHOULD BE." This line of thinking was implied near the end of the chapter where C.J. writes, “…it’s a lifelong battle. We must resist its influence until our dying breath.” But if I didn’t know C.J. and his theological views as well as I do, I might be confused because in the preceding sentence he says, “…hard heart-work will be needed to cut it (worldliness) out.” Is it a life-long battle, or will we be able to completely cut worldliness out of our lives at some point? I wish this was a bit more clear and that he would have stated his views on progressive sanctification a bit more explicitly throughout the whole of the chapter. Perhaps this issue will be fleshed out in the rest of the book. This is perhaps the downside of doing a book review one chapter at a time. I am open to correction as I read the rest of this book.

He closes the chapter by drawing our attention to Jesus and his life and work. The reality of my need for a savior based on my sometimes love for the world draws me to the cross in thanksgiving and praise as I cling to the One who was completely free from worldliness for me. C.J. does a marvelous job drawing our attention to this great Savior who is the remedy for despair for those who are entrenched in worldliness and for those who pridefully think they have it licked. The fight against sin is not a matter of bearing down and forcing ourselves to stop doing certain things, but rather of replacing the folly of our sin with a vision of the glory of the Jesus, His cross and the empty tomb. Therein lies the power to defeat sin and this Jesus is certainly our only hope in our fight against worldliness.

I'm definitely going to have to get this one. Thanks for the review of chapter one.

Thanks for this review, Zach! About some of C.J's very "absolute" statements concerning worldliness (I do think that he should have used "to what degree," instead of "whether," regarding the infection of worldliness), maybe he is using the Biblical language of hyperbole to make an especially serious point, in at least some cases? I don't know; I'm speculating. Obviously, I haven't read the book myself yet.

I do know that, in Romans 8:13, when I read "if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live," I think to myself sometimes, "To *death*? Then I'm a goner! Why not just fight very, very hard against those deeds, by the Spirit's power? Why am I called to put them *to death*?" That's an absolute statement. I think that such statements are to be taken very seriously and to be seriously applied to one's life, but I also think that there is an element of hyperbole to them (anyone, please correct me if I am wrong here).

What I mean by hyperbole is that we will never completely put to death all of the sinful deeds of the body in this life. Yet God still calls us to do so, in the same way, seemingly, that C.J. makes certain absolute statements in this book. God knows (and C.J. knows, in a much lesser way) that we will not be able to *completely* rid ourselves of all sinful worldliness in this life, while we are in these fallen (but still good, made by God) bodies. However, we are to be *blood-earnest* about fighting our wars against sin, both in ourselves and in the wider world. We are to leave no provision for the flesh-- to "take no prisoners" in this war.

In our sinfulness though, will we, in some way(s), still leave provision for the flesh? Sadly, yes. We should be continually warring against this "leaving of provision" though.

“Love Not The World”

”For the WHOLE world is under the control of the evil one”(I John 5:19)

Rather simple to "see" what the world is, for those with "eyes to see"? The Messiah declared the world to be wicked, and i believe it rather simple to "see" that the world is that place where money is 'god', and 'god' is money. That place where The Only True GOD's Order, which is HIS Will, has been cast aside, replaced by the "imag"ined systems of mankind, and especially the religious systems, that create but confusion, dis-order, and every evil work. Yet to those who are of this world such a place is a paradise. And what better represents such a place than that which is called the u.s. of a.?

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world will pass away, and the lust thereof: but he that does the will of The Only True GOD will abide for ever.” (I John 2:15-17)

“If you were of the world, the world would love it’s own: but because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said unto you, the servant is not greater than his Master. If they have persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept My saying, they will keep yours also.” (John 15:19-20)

“Where do wars and fighting among you come from? Do they not come of your lusts that war in your members? You lust, and have not: you kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: you fight and war yet you have not, because you ask not. You ask, and receive not, because you ask amiss, that you may consume it upon your lusts. You adulterers and adulteresses, don’t you know that friendship with the world is to be at enmity with The Only True GOD? Therefore whoever will be a friend of the world is the enemy of The Only True GOD.” (James 4:1-4)

“The world cannot hate you; but the world hates Me, because I testify that the works of this world are evil.” (John 7:7)” and “The Messiah gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of The Only True God, Our Father.”(Gal 1:4)

The Messiah testified: “If the world hates you know that it hated Me before it hated you.”(John 5:18) Truly, Truly, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abides alone: but if it die it brings forth much fruit. He that loves his life in this world shall lose it; and he that hates his life in this world shall have it unto life eternal.” (John 12:24-25)

John testified: “Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hates you.” (I John 3:13) “ James testified, “Whoever would be a friend of this world is the enemy of GOD”(James 4:4)

The “earth” is The Creation of The Only True GOD, Father of ALL! The “worldly” systems are the creation of, and under the dominion of “the god of this world”, he who is “the father of lies”, he who “has blinded the minds of those who believe not The Messiah”! All the nations of this world are under the dominion of, and serve, the evil one for he provides the fuel that feeds mankind’s “imag”ination, and mankind’s “imagination is destroying and perverting Creation(land, air, water, creatures, Truth, Love, Peace, Faith, Simplicity, .etc.) ;-(

And the “strongest thing” in the evil one’s worldly systems? “Woman”…… yet The Truth, that which is of The Only True GOD, is stronger even than woman. (read I Esdras 3&4 of the Apocrypha) And Truth, Love, Peace, Faith, Mercy, Hope,,,etc,,, all that is “good”, is of The Only True GOD and is of HIS Spirit, not of this world. Those born of The Spirit, those born of The Only True GOD, are the brethren of The Messiah, for they received "a love of The Truth that they might be saved”. Reborn!

And those who have received "a love of The Truth” have separated themselves from this world and those of this world, for they have taken heed unto The Call of The Only True GOD to “Come out of her MY people.” They are “in, but not of this wicked, evil world”, and The Only True GOD has received them, and is "A Father unto them, and they are HIS sons and daughters”. And they follow, and desire to be like their Master and Brother, The Messiah, He Who was “the firstborn of many brethren”. And as “The Messiah was a servant of The Only True GOD”, so also His Brethren are “servants of The Only True GOD.”

The called out ones are not “adulterers and adulteresses”, they are not “friends of this wicked, evil world”, they do not “fornicate with the god of this world” for they know that “to be a friend of this world is to be the enemy of The Only True GOD.” They are at war against the evil spirits that possess those who are of this world.

And they do not “allow that woman Jezebel, which calls herself a prophetess, to teach. For she teaches others to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. The Only True GOD gave her a chance to repent of her fornication; and she repented not.” (Rev 2:20-21)

“fornication” and “adultery..” in that which is recorded above signifies spiritual fornication with “the god of this world”, which is to love that which is of his world.

Once again, the “earth” is The Creation of The Only True GOD, Father of ALL! The “worldly” systems are the creation of, and under the dominion of “the god of this world”.

Those who “love this world” all serve “the god of this world”, and play their part in the processes that seek to destroy The Creation of The Only True GOD. “And The Only True GOD will destroy them who destroy the earth.” (Rev 11:18)

Global warming, polluted air, land and waters, toxic wastes, sexual perversion, evil inventions of destruction, greed, hate, carnal warfare, dis-ease ,,,etc,,, are all destructive processes that have their root in “the lust of the eye, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life”.

And as stated, “woman is the strongest thing of this world”. Yet stronger than woman is The Truth, which is in those who have “received a love of The Truth”.

The Truth Is Alive in those who have been born of The Spirit for “they no longer love this wicked, evil world and it’s things, nor do they love their own lives in this world”.

They but seek and desire The Will of GOD, their Father and Creator, as they await their final transformation. “Corruptible to Incorruptible" ndeed and Truth!

Now “the ground was cursed for Adam’s sake” because he “hearkened unto the woman”.

Adam listened to a woman rather than obeying The Only True GOD. Yet because of Faithful Noah, The Only True GOD “no longer would curse the ground for man’s sake” because Noah obeyed The Only True GOD! (Genesis 8:21-22)

And the Faithful today are exhorted to “love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.” And Faithful women are exhorted to “be in silence.” “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. For I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.” “For Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.” (I Timothy 2:11,12,14)

A man and woman joined together in obedience and submission unto The Only True GOD are blessed indeed. All who are not obedient, all who will not submit themselves unto The Only True GOD will have to answer to HIM..period..

Be not of those who deny and defy “The One GOD, Father of All”. Be not of those who are destroying and perverting HIS Creation(land, air, water, creatures, Light, Truth, Love, Peace, Hope, Mercy, Thankfulness, .etc.)!

Paul testified, “The Only True GOD is The HEAD of The Messiah, The Messiah is The Head of the man, and the man is the head of the woman”. Multitudes pervert GOD’s Order because they have been seduced by ” the commandments and doctrines of men and devils”.

Multitudes are seduced by the religious systems that are in and of this evil world. Seduced because they love this evil world and their own life in it!

“Set your affections on things above”. Desire heavenly, eternal things. Quit serving ‘time’ in the prison that is this world and take heed unto The Call of "The Only True GOD" to ”Come Out of her, MY people!”

Once again, “Come out” of the worldly systems, which are the product of mankind’s “imag”ination, especially the religious systems. “Come out” from among those who are destroying and perverting Creation and be of those who follow The Messiah on “The Way to The Truth of The Life”.

Peace, in spite of the dis-ease(no-peace) that is of this world, for "the WHOLE world is under the control of the evil one" indeed and Truth.......

Truth is never ending.......
