Are We Really Pro-Life?

Dan Edelen asks a hard question:
"...conservative Christians are most definitely prolife, right? Not really. What we are is anti-abortion. We are by no means pro-life. If we were truly pro-life then orphanages would be relegated solely to Dickens’s Oliver Twist, and nursing homes would be empty, instead of filled with our elderly parents. Again, what we are against and what we are for are not the same thing. We have to stop pretending they are."
This is why I am passionate about adoption. Today, I am presenting a proposal to the elders of the church where I work concerning an official adoption ministry at our church with the help of The ABBA Fund. Would you pray with me that more churches would raise up a culture of adoption?

my first thought was, "are we really pro-life if we are pro-war (though i know the war issue is more complicated than being 'pro-war')? are we really pro-life if we are pro-death penalty?" Like D-Webb says "are we defending life, when we just pick and choose, lives acceptable to lose, and which ones to defend?" good post

Yes! And this is why I am also passionate about (and writing a book on) family caregiving.

- We need to create an award for "Worst. Analogy. Ever."

I'll say what I came to say first, and then talk to Cody....

Being anti-preborn-baby-murder, you're right, we need to TRULY be pro-life, both in quality of life for those we save from the baby-barbers and at the end of life.

As for war...war is a different category. It is not murder, though it is admittedly tragic and a result of man's sin nature. I long for the last war to be over...but I maintain that it is not in the same category as baby murder.

And the death penalty is different, too, in that it IS PRESCRIBED IN SCRIPTURE. It is a penalty rightly imposed (in most cases) for the premeditated taking of a life, or a few other heinous crimes. I believe it should only be exacted when there were eye witnesses (or possibly incontrovertible evidence), and it should be exactly swiftly upon sentencing, but it is right and GOOD that it is in place...in this age.

Yes, I will, Zach-- pray with you on churches and a culture of adoption, that is! :-)

Way to be an advocate for the fatherless and launch an adoption fund in your church!

Absolutely. Have been and will continue praying for this.

Any chance you could send me a copy of your proposal? My family has been blessed with adoption, and consequently, a number of other families in our church have taken up the challenge to care for the orphans. I'm heading into church planting and want to create a culture of adoption in our churches as well.

If you don't mind, send it to fergie4@gmail.com.

Thanks,
John
