Are Christians Required To Tithe?

Ryan Kelly:

This short 1999 Christianity Today article on tithing begins in quintessentially-Carson fashion:

“A simple yes or no to this question would be horribly misleading.”

And in quintessentially-Carson fashion he unpacks the complexity of the issue in very clear terms.

Very good article. An interesting thing I heard once was that though the NT doesn't say explicitly to tithe, every example of giving in the NT is far beyond 10%.

I've been thinking and studying about this one lately. I've come to the conclusion that tithing is not mandatory as such, but that Christians should be generous to the best of their ability given their current circumstances- whether that be 5%, 50% or any other percentage of income.

It is amazing how worked up some Christians get about tithing. I could deny the deity of Jesus or some very fundamental doctrine and get less hostility than i have when i have questioned the legitimacy of mandatory tithing which is not at all clear in the new testament.
