Add to that some disturbing words from the great American heretic, Charles G. Finney, "Sinners ought to be made to feel that they have something to do, and that is, to repent that it is something which no other being can do for them, neither God nor man; and something which they can do, and do now. Religion is something to do, not something to wait for. And they must do it now, or they are in danger of eternal death."
Something to do OBVIOUSLY includes making yourself pretty and redeemable.
I would recommend reading A Profound Weakness: Christians & Kitsch by Betty Spackman. I found it did an excellent job framing items like this within a larger context that I originally could not appreciate.

Just bought one for my daughter. If you love yours, you'll buy several.
The terms "whitewashed tombs," "Another gospel" and others like "desires of the flesh" come quickly to mind.
