Dog-Fighting vs. The NFL - Is There Much Difference?

I love the NFL, but this article from Malcolm Gladwell might make me love it a little less. In it he compares the sport dog-fighting (we probably shouldn't call it a sport) with NFL football. It's a compelling case.

Interesting article. What differentiates dog fighting and football, though, is the willingness of the participants, an idea which the author does not include. All of the guys that I have known that played sports at a high level accept that their participation brings with it significant physical risk - whether it is a concussion or blown out knee. Yet they choose to play anyway. They are there of their own volition. The gravity of the money and the glory and maybe even the risk keep them on that field.
